When the weather is changing from nothing-touching-my-body temps to maybe-I-can-wear-silk my heart begins to smile. I used to loathe any thought of winter. Maybe it was the dark mornings and early evenings drudging too and from school. Maybe it was the fact that it signaled term papers, finals, and long spans with no public holidays (we don’t celebrate Chinese New Year in the same fashion in Macon, Georgia). Or maybe it was that I just really hated having to wear jeans when I knew they were going to be too short and I would look like a fool for the next four months. Now that I have conquered the quest for long pants and am past the days of pass or fail I have come to love this time of year. The buzz around holiday travel and the frenzy of gift bazaars as they spring up all over town excite me to no end. The moment I can truly ditch my iced latte for a hot chocolate is the real arrival of winter for me. But in Hong Kong even the appearance of Christmas trees and sleigh bells is no guarantee that you will get to dress the part. Thank goodness for endless air cons and Cathy flights back home. One away or another I will have my hot chocolate and drink it too.
